**Chapter 1**
The rain fell steadily on a cool September day, wrapping the quaint mountain town in a gentle shroud of mist. It washed over the cobblestone streets, bringing with it a sweet, earthy aroma that blended seamlessly with the crisp air. Nestled within this serene backdrop was a singular high school, its aged facade belying the vibrant life that buzzed within.
Eighteen-year-old Nicole Wallace made her way through the narrow corridors, the soft patter of her shoes barely audible over the soft murmur of conversations around her. Dressed modestly, she could easily be overlooked among her peers, yet there was an undeniable allure in her presence—a beauty that lingered beneath the surface of her despondent expression. Her eyes, however, held a chilling depth; they seemed to harbor secrets that left her looking almost ethereal, yet painfully aloof.
“Mr. Barrett, here comes Nicole,” Ms. Mills, her class teacher, announced, her voice resonating with an unexpected warmth.
Nicole lifted an eyebrow, taken aback by this sudden kindness. Ms. Mills was known for her rigid standards, always prioritizing lineage and family connections when it came to school affairs.
“Let her in,” the principal replied, his voice betraying an unwarranted excitement that sent a ripple of curiosity through Nicole.
As she stepped into the principal's office, the cool air enveloped her like a blanket, and a soft chuckle escaped her lips. Compelled by a force she couldn't quite name, she found herself drawn to the man seated elegantly on a plush sofa. He was tall and impeccably dressed in an expensive suit, exuding an air of confidence reserved for those of high status. Yet, it was his features that captivated her; he bore an uncanny resemblance to her, evoking a tumult of emotions in Nicole.
Their eyes locked, and she could sense a shared recognition—the obvious connection between them sending her heart racing. He had originally planned to accompany her to the hospital for a DNA test, but it appeared that was rendered unnecessary. The striking similarities, particularly their identical waning features and creamy complexion, spoke volumes.
Yet it was her eyes that captured his attention the most, glimmering with an enigmatic coldness that seemed beyond her years.
“Who are you?” Nicole inquired, an edge of suspicion lacing her voice that she couldn’t suppress.
For as long as she could remember, Nicole had known she wasn’t her grandmother’s biological granddaughter. There had always lingered the hope that one day, her real family would emerge from the shadows of her past. But this man—this sharply dressed stranger—was younger than she had imagined her parents to be.
“I am your elder brother,” he revealed, a flicker of annoyance passing through his deep-set eyes.
“Nicole, how is it that you never told us your brother is the general manager of Riddle Corporation in San Joto?” Mr. Barrett interjected, his tone singling her out amidst the uncertainty.
Nicole rolled her eyes inwardly, taken aback—just how was she supposed to know this? It had been three years since her parents had tragically lost their lives in a car accident, a loss that shattered her existence. It was only after their passing that her grandmother had revealed the truth—Nicole had been adopted as a child, the piece of information hiding in plain sight. The depth of her adopted parents' emotional detachment finally made sense; no wonder they had kept her hidden away in the countryside.
“Are you truly my brother?” Nicole questioned, disbelief weighing heavily on her words, a disconcerting twist in this once-familiar narrative.
“Indeed, and you have four brothers besides me,” the man, who introduced himself as Sean Riddle, replied gently, a hint of brotherly affection edging his voice.
“Four?” The implications of this revelation churned in her mind. The notion of having four brothers was so foreign to Nicole that it was difficult to grasp. She imagined the commotion that would certainly accompany such a lively brood—what chaos it might spawn.
Observing the contemplative frown on Nicole’s face, Ms. Mills, ever the mediator, interjected. “Nicole is a bit more reserved. She just needs time to adjust. I hope that’s alright."
“Mrs. Wallace, I understand completely,” Sean said with a polite smile, quickly pulling a gift box from his backpack. “Nicole, this is for you. It’s the least I could do on our first meeting.”
At this, Mr. Barrett stood up, eager to smooth things over. “What a thoughtful gesture, Nicole! Your brother is truly admirable. Accept the gift—it’s clear you two share a special bond. And please remember us here at Great Oak High when you transfer to San Joto!”
At Mr. Barrett's words, Sean’s demeanor shifted; his smile faded into a stony expression. He glanced back at Mr. Barrett coolly and said, “Mr. Barrett, Great Oak High has nurtured my sister for years. We will express our gratitude by donating funds to enhance your campus.”
The room buzzed with an electric kind of energy; Mr. Barrett’s eyes sparkled with glee. “That is generous of you, Mr. Riddle. Thank you very much!”
Nicole felt a swell of appreciation for her brother’s thoughtfulness. Caught between politeness and a myriad of emotions, she reluctantly accepted the beautifully wrapped gift.
With pleasantries exchanged, Mr. Barrett and Ms. Mills guided them out of the office.
As they stepped outside, the sight awaiting them was nothing short of spectacular; a shimmering Rolls-Royce stood majestically at the school's entrance, drawing the attention of students like moths to a flame.
Regina Wynn was the first to break the spell, her friend tugging her sleeve. “Regina, look!”
Regina rolled her eyes but was unable to pull her gaze away from the luxury vehicle. “Whose car is that?” she mused, her curiosity piqued beyond her usual haughtiness.
As the daughter of a member of the school’s board, Regina was accustomed to attention, yet this car eclipsed everything she had known. “I heard the general manager of Riddle Corporation is visiting our school,” her friend informed her, barely able to restrain her excitement.
“Riddle Corporation?” Regina’s mind raced, trying to comprehend. ‘The largest corporation in San Joto? Even my father struggles to negotiate with them! What could bring them to this place?’
Suddenly, panic struck her friend like a bolt of lightning. “No, I heard he’s here to pick up his sister.”
“Pick up his sister?” Regina was blown away by this revelation. “Are you sure? Why would a member of the Riddle family want to study at this... ordinary school?”
As if on cue, a procession emerged from the school, led by the principal and several faculty members, accompanying the striking figure of Sean and the confused visage of Nicole Wallace.
“Regina,” her friend whispered in awe, “that’s him—the general manager of Riddle Corporation!”
Regina turned slowly, her heart racing. If he was indeed the general manager, the girl beside him must be his sister. But then it registered fully—the girl was none other than Nicole, the simple countryside girl she had so often derided. The realization struck Regina like a cold wave, crashing down upon her with utter disbelief. Nicole was from the Riddle family? Her mind reeled, failing to process the implications of what this discovery might mean in her own world.
