**Chapter 31: A Drunken Kiss**
Janet's mind began to clear only after the restaurant owner had departed alongside his staff, leaving her alone with Ethan in the dimly lit corner of the eatery. She was still grappling with disbelief, her eyes fixed on him, questioning how he could remain so composed amidst the chaos that had just unfolded.
"Ethan, what just happened back there?" she blurted, her voice laced with confusion. "Why was the owner so nice to you? He didn't even bother to dig deeper into the situation. How could he be so certain that those waitresses were rude to us?"
She fired her inquiries at him like bullets, each one a desperate attempt to make sense of the scene.
Ethan shrugged, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "He didn’t need to ask. High-end restaurants have their methods. They know that safeguarding their reputation is paramount. The manager and those waitresses may have acted carelessly, but the owner knew exactly how to rectify the damage. Losing even a single customer could cost them dearly; reputation is everything in this business."
Janet bit her lip, taking in his words. It all made a surprising amount of sense.
"Speaking of that…" A playful grin spread across her face as she nudged his arm lightly. "You were so authoritative! It was like you were the boss man."
“People like us have to maintain a facade at all times. It’s a perilous world out there. If I didn’t, I might as well write my own obituary,” Ethan said, filling her bowl with fragrant soup. She could see the truth in his gaze, and she chose not to pry further into the complexities of his life.
Without the burden of the dinner bill hanging over her head, Janet indulged wholeheartedly in the feast, ordering every dish that tantalized her taste buds. In a gesture of goodwill, the owner presented them with a bottle of Lafite—a small token of apology that Janet had never anticipated. Never having tasted wine of such caliber before, she found herself savoring the rich liquid, each glass warming her heart and blurring her senses.
Before long, the intoxicating effects of the wine took hold, and she felt as though she was floating. Ethan, recognizing the haze in her eyes, gently scooped her into his arms as they left the restaurant.
Outside, Sean had been waiting patiently, leaning against the car with a knowing smile. He flung open the door with a grin. “Boss, you and your wife seem to be in high spirits tonight.”
“She’s had a bit too much to drink,” Ethan replied, carefully placing her inside the vehicle. Turning back to Sean, he added, “Have Garrett conduct another check on all the restaurants under the Larson Group.”
In her slightly tipsy state, Janet could feel the heat radiating from her body. She whimpered, shedding her light coat and revealing a thin camisole beneath. “I’m burning up! Ethan, I need to cool off!”
With concern etching his handsome features, Ethan caught her gaze in the rearview mirror. “Behave yourself. We aren’t alone in the car,” he whispered, a hint of authority in his voice.
Sean's head snapped away, a mixture of surprise and wistfulness filling him. He had served Ethan for years, but never had he seen him exude such warmth and intimacy with anyone before. ‘Has he turned soft?’ Sean mused, shaking his head almost immediately. No, “soft” didn’t quite fit. He had witnessed Ethan's fierce and relentless side too many times to consider that descriptor.
“But I’m really hot! So very hot, Ethan!” Janet pouted, leaning into him, her cheek resting against the solid wall of his chest. Her gaze, hazy and unfocused, bore into his.
Ethan felt a spark ignite within him, his senses heightening as she nestled closer. He reached out, his fingers brushing against her forehead, wiping away the sheen of perspiration. “Just a little longer. We’ll be home soon,” he murmured, tenderness lacing his voice as his fingers caressed her cheek.
The heat between them was undeniable, spiraling into something electric. In her dazed state, Janet buried her head against his shoulder, her nose grazing his neck, igniting a fire within him. A soft giggle escaped her lips as she playfully teased her fingers over his Adam's apple, her intoxicating laughter echoing in the small space.
“Didn’t I ask you to behave?” Ethan warned, his voice low and gravelly.
But before she could respond, he had her pinned against the window, their bodies colliding as he captured her gaze with smoldering eyes that betrayed his own longing. In that moment, everything else faded away. He closed the distance between them, his lips brushing against hers in a gentle yet passionate kiss.
Ethan thought she was the one making the first move, tempting him in ways he had never allowed himself to imagine. His hands cradled her neck as he nipped at her bottom lip, coaxing her to grant him entry.
With a tremor of excitement, Janet surrendered to him, her fingers intertwining in the fabric of his shirt as she tilted her head back, gasping for breath. But Ethan was relentless, slipping his tongue into her mouth, deepening the kiss as the world around them faded into mere background noise.
In that heady moment, nothing else mattered—just the two of them lost in a whirlwind of passion and intoxication.
