**Chapter 18: Confrontation**
“Sit.”
Elliot’s icy gaze bore into Avery as he commanded her.
“Okay,” she replied, her voice steady despite the storm brewing within her. She settled onto the couch across from him, feeling the tension crackle in the air.
Resting on the coffee table was a laptop, its screen illuminated, revealing a shocking sight—surveillance footage that had the power to shatter any pretense.
Displayed vividly on the screen was a bed. On that bed lay both Avery and Elliot, entangled in moments she wished to forget. A rush of indignation surged through her, blood boiling in her veins at the sight.
Without warning, she sprang to her feet, pointing fervently at the laptop, her voice rising in outrage. “Are you a pervert?! Did you seriously install a camera in the bedroom?” Fury radiated from her, a tempest of emotions threatening to consume her.
The three months they had shared a bed felt like a dark cloud looming over her spirit—three months during which Elliot lay in a vegetative state, his existence as a man simply eclipsed in her mind. The idea that someone could be watching them during such an intimate time was intolerable.
Elliot, witnessing her tremors of rage, felt an unexpected sense of calm wash over him.
“Why do you think I installed the cameras?” he challenged, brows furrowing in confusion. The reality was different; it was his mother who had taken the initiative to safeguard him in his vulnerable state, installing the very cameras as a precaution against any mistreatment by caregivers. He understood her motivations; such a powerful figure as he was none would dare take advantage of someone in such a helpless condition.
“I found out about the cameras after the fact,” he clarified, a hint of frustration bubbling within him. “I retrieved the footage from my mother. And honestly? Watching those videos left me surprised. I never thought you’d cross lines like that.”
Avery’s breath hitched at the realization, but her reaction was to unleash her frustration. “Oh, so it's your mother’s fault?” She shook her head in disbelief, her anger simmering just below the surface. “She could have at least warned me! I... I…”
“Did you truly expect me to remain in the dark forever?” Elliot shot back, his tone sharp. "It looks like you enjoyed every moment while I was incapacitated.”
Avery's face flushed crimson with embarrassment as she registered his words. “I did not! I wasn’t taking advantage of you! I was giving you a massage, that's all! To prevent muscle atrophy!”
She recalled the nurse’s diligent work and how she, out of sheer awkwardness, began to take over the nurse’s role. It hadn’t been out of malice; it was a desperate attempt to fill the silence in the room.
For a brief moment, confusion clouded Elliot's mind. Perhaps he was misjudging her intentions. Fortunately, the cameras had captured every moment, serving as irrefutable witness.
“Open it up and see for yourself,” he challenged, unwilling to entertain any more of her excuses.
Her hand quivered as she reached towards the laptop, dread pooling in her stomach. Hitting the play button, she braced herself, knowing precisely what the footage contained.
Though she wished to deny the troubling implications of her actions, the evidence was staring back at her, pushing her to confront the truth she wanted to evade.
Her eyes darted away as she forced herself not to look, but her peripheral vision betrayed her, unwilling to turn away from the unfolding narrative that echoed her inner turmoil.
Elliot smirked; the footage had indeed caught her in the act, documenting every moment she had “played” with his body, and he was reveling in her humiliation.
Taking a deep breath, Avery gathered her thoughts, desperate to deflect the weight of the situation. “Let me explain! The doctors said you were on the brink, that you might never wake up. I thought I was simply doing physical therapy! You can’t just focus on the times I touched you while neglecting the hard work I put into your recovery!”
A brief pulse of frustration coursed through Elliot as he absorbed her defense. “Is that so? Let me find a clip of you giving me a proper massage…”
Determination settled into Avery as she dismissed his plan with a flick of her wrist over the laptop’s touchpad.
A tense silence wrought havoc in the air as she suddenly snapped the laptop shut and leapt to her feet. “Sh*t!” The realization struck her like a lightning bolt—“Did you see all of that? You’ve seen everything, haven’t you?!”
Panic resonated in her voice as she frantically assessed the fallout.
Elliot couldn’t resist the edge of amusement in the situation. “Of course,” he retorted, a nonchalant tone slipping between his words like ice on fire.
“Ahhh! You b*st*rd! Who told you to look? You hooligan!” Avery gnashed her teeth in anger, indignation bubbling just beneath the surface. The video had unwrapped not just her thoughts, but moments when she had inadvertently exposed herself, swirling in her mind like a whirlwind.
“Who exposed herself, exactly? Why are you blaming me?” Elliot shot back, baffled by her fiery anger.
“Besides, for someone as ostentatiously pale as you, there isn’t much to gawk at,” he drawled, a raspy tone lacing his words.
Avery’s cheeks burned anew with rage, and she seized the reins of her emotions. “Who are you to judge my body?! If you don’t know what to say, just shut your mouth! I’m deleting everything!”
Seething, she snatched the laptop and stormed toward her room, slamming the door with a resounding thud behind her.
The driver, stationed outside, raised an eyebrow, having heard the echoes of Avery’s outrage mixed with the finality of the door closing. He sighed at the unfolding turmoil; who would’ve thought he’d witness a woman ignite such chaos within the stoic walls of Elliot Foster?
…
Later that evening, after an exhausting confrontation, Avery returned the laptop to the coffee table, the final remnants of the surveillance footage erased from existence.
The stress from the earlier encounter gnawed at her insides, and suddenly, hunger clawed at her. She donned a brave face and walked into the dining room, though an unsettling feeling still lingered.
Elliot’s absence didn't quell the sensation; it was as if the walls themselves still carried eyes, all observing her every move.
“I didn’t know there were cameras in the master bedroom, Madam,” Mrs. Cooper offered hesitantly, catching her attention. “Master Elliot truly had nothing to do with it. He cherishes his privacy more than anyone.”
“It’s fine. I’ve deleted everything,” Avery muttered, though her stomach churned at the notion of being watched.
She picked at her food, quickly losing her appetite after just a few bites. “Was he in a particularly bad mood earlier?” she asked, curiosity piqued.
“Kind of,” Mrs. Cooper replied, gauging the atmosphere.
“I see…” Avery mused. “Well, it’s not like he’ll come charging at me. Besides, it seems my privacy didn’t matter to him, so I’ll just have to face things head-on.”
With resolute strides, she left the dining room, bracing herself for whatever consequences awaited her, only to nearly collide with Elliot as she reached the threshold.
He was a statue, his dark eyes fixed on her with a frigid intensity. There was something mesmerizing about those depths—a magnetism that sent her heart racing and left her momentarily rooted in place.
“Move.”
His voice, low and commanding, snapped her back to reality.
Avery hesitated only a heartbeat before shifting aside, allowing him space to enter the dining room. Heat rushed to her cheeks as she watched him glide past, realizing he had not come to provoke her but to take a seat for dinner.
“Get it together!” she berated herself, remembering her own exposure earlier during his unresponsive state. What was the big deal, after all? They had both witnessed each other’s vulnerability in their own ways.
Her thoughts swirled in a mix of embarrassment and defiance. The battle within her heart raged on, and she was unsure how she would emerge from the aftermath of this revelation.
