**Chapter 49**
"Mr. Foster, are your legs alright without the wheelchair?" Chad inquired softly, concern lacing his words.
Elliot had purposefully left his wheelchair behind, determined to navigate this evening without any encumbrances. He understood that having to roll along in the chair would diminish the enjoyment of the date that he had been anticipating with Avery.
Unfortunately, he felt a pang of disappointment as he realized that she seemed oblivious to his intent.
With a brusque shove to Ben and Chad, Elliot's chilly demeanor cut through the air like a sharp knife. “I’m fine,” he snapped, asserting his independence.
“Let’s grab a drink, Elliot!” Ben chimed in cheerfully, his hand grasping firmly onto Elliot’s arm, keen to steer him towards camaraderie. “Charlie Tierney’s around—let’s bring him into the mix!”
At the mention of Charlie, Elliot's already stern expression darkened further. Charlie was Chelsea's older brother, a connection that hadn’t spared him from being the mediator when tensions flared between Elliot and Chelsea. The Tierneys were well-known in Rosacus City, their family name intertwined with a lineage of wealth and influence, and Charlie, as the heir, spent much of his time there — his frequent trips serving as a reminder of the family dynamics that often left Elliot in a storm of irritation.
After a pregnant pause, Elliot replied, “No.”
He strode toward the elevator with a steadiness that betrayed the tumult of emotions swirling within him. Each step was measured, though not hurried; he was regaining strength, even if his romantic life remained an intricate mess.
By the time Elliot returned home, the clock read seven thirty. Mrs. Cooper was waiting, her face brightening as she announced, “Madam Avery prepared a gift for you, Master Elliot.”
The weight of the ornate box in his hands piqued his curiosity. What could it contain? “Is she home?” he queried abruptly.
“Yes, she is,” Mrs. Cooper replied, a hint of pride in her voice. “She went back to her room to write her thesis after dinner.”
Elliot’s lips formed a tight line as he scrutinized the package. This gift—was it a gesture born from guilt? Had she come to terms with her previous rudeness? The thought flickered in his mind. Perhaps it was the least he could aspire to: a second chance at clarity.
With deliberation, he unwrapped the box, his breath hitching slightly as he unveiled its contents. A book stared up at him with bold lettering that proclaimed, “The Art of Anger Management,” adorned with an image of a vibrant ginseng plant.
His brows knitted in disbelief. Was this Avery's attempt at an apology? Did she truly aim to mend their rift, or was this some backhanded test of his character, painting him as stubborn and narrow-minded?
Mrs. Cooper's smile faded as swiftly as his own mood darkened. She instinctively retracted her earlier compliments, her apprehension palpable. “I’ll fetch Madam Avery so she can explain this,” she offered, grasping for a way to salvage the situation. “I'm sure she had no ill intentions…”
“Forget it!” Elliot spat, his frustration spilling over as he slammed the book onto the table, the sound echoing ominously around the room.
Avery felt her heart clench in response to the noise from down the hall. The dilemma of her choice began to loom larger. She had chosen that book for a reason—one of her professors had suggested it, and having read it herself, she found its insights transformative. It explored the profound connections between mental and physical health, urging that less anger could lead to a clearer mind, a healthier body. Surely that was worth something?
Was he offended by the price? She could scarcely afford anything lavish, but her intentions were sincere. Anxiety coiled within her chest as she weighed her options—should she confront him?
Suddenly, the door to her room swung open, and there stood Elliot, his tall, muscular silhouette casting a formidable shadow as he stood before her.
The air thickened with unspoken tension, neither prepared for the confrontation that lay ahead.
