Chapter 58
“Is this Miss Avery Tate?”
A warm, deep voice reverberated through the phone, enveloping Avery in a sense of calm yet intrigue.
“Yes, this is Avery. May I ask who’s calling?” she inquired, arching an eyebrow, slightly on guard.
“Hello, I’m Charlie Tierney from Trust Capital. Your number was kindly provided to me by your HR department. I’m reaching out with a proposal for collaboration,” Charlie explained, his tone earnest and sincere.
“Trust Capital?” she echoed, curiosity sparking.
“Exactly. Are you available to meet today? I happen to be in the vicinity of your office,” Charlie said, his eagerness palpable.
Avery pondered for a brief moment, weighing her options before ultimately accepting his invitation. With a sense of determination, she dialed the HR manager at Tate Industries.
“Do you know of Charlie Tierney from Trust Capital?” she asked, as if seeking validation.
“He’s quite the impressive investor! Trust Capital ranks among the nation’s top ten investment banks. That’s why I didn’t hesitate to give him your number when he requested it earlier,” came the confident reply from the HR manager.
“Understood,” Avery nodded, feeling a mix of apprehension and excitement.
“Do you want me to accompany you for the meeting? I fear you may feel overwhelmed going alone,” her manager suggested, concern lacing their voice. Morale had taken a considerable hit since Shaun's departure, leading to unrest among the staff. If they couldn’t attract investors soon, the very foundation of the company could crumble.
“It’s alright. It’s the weekend; you should take some time to rest,” Avery reassured, her voice steady.
As she headed to the meeting, a sense of anticipation mingled with a hint of nervousness. She decided to look up Charlie Tierney online. When his photo came into view, she felt a jolt of surprise. He looked far younger than she had anticipated.
A quick scan of his age confirmed that they were indeed peers; he was younger than Elliot, yet Charlie’s youthful demeanor was palpable. The answer behind her perception dawned on her—a radiant smile illuminated Charlie’s face in the photo, while Elliot’s expression often resembled a stone-cold facade.
Upon entering Cafe Meadow, Avery spotted Charlie instantly. He rose from his seat, a wave of warmth radiating from him. She approached and settled into the chair opposite him.
“Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Tierney,” she said, her tone a mix of professionalism and intrigue.
“Please, just Charlie will do. Let’s keep it casual,” he replied, his smile inviting as he slid the menu across the table toward her.
Avery hesitated, her hand fluttering in the air awkwardly. “I don’t drink coffee,” she confessed, casting her gaze aside. “I’ve been having trouble sleeping, so the doctor advised me to cut out caffeine.”
Immediately, concern flickered across Charlie’s face. “Oh, I’m sorry! I wasn’t aware. We can go somewhere else if that’s the case.”
“No, no, it’s fine. I’ll just have some water,” she said quickly. “You mentioned a collaboration; could you elaborate on why you’re interested in working with us?”
As Charlie ordered a coffee and a slice of cake for himself, he regarded her thoughtfully. “From a business perspective, I have great admiration for Tate Industries,” he began, a hint of admiration sparkling in his eyes.
Avery leaned in, intrigued. “Are you considering our self-driving program?”
His expression shifted, turning contemplative. “Your father had aspirations to enter the private vehicle market with that program. However, I believe there’s untapped potential beyond that. We might steer it toward exploration, search and rescue operations, or even military applications… What do you think?”
Ideas began to blossom in Avery's mind, possibilities she had never considered before.
“Focusing solely on the private sector poses significant risks,” Charlie continued, his voice steady. “One or two critical failures could utterly tarnish the company’s reputation.”
Avery nodded in agreement, impressed by his insight. “That’s a valid point, Mr. Tierney. Can you share what type of collaboration you envision?”
Charlie adjusted his glasses, a light smile painting his features. “Word has it someone is keen on acquiring Tate Industries.”
“Yes,” Avery confirmed, sensing a pivotal moment unfolding. “He’s aiming for a buyout.”
The weight of their conversation was heavy, charged with the present implications and future uncertainties that lingered in the air between them.
