### Chapter 3: The Gathering Shadows
#### Jasmine’s Point of View
The vast grounds of our pack sprawled like an untouched canvas, with the packhouse standing tall and proud in its immaculate white façade, glistening against the backdrop of verdant pastures that rolled out endlessly. In front of our grand house, small cozy huts sheltered the families of mated omegas, their laughter blending with the gentle rustle of nature, while the unmated omegas found refuge within the packhouse's warm embrace. Yet, on the fringes of our domain, near the shadowy forest, stood abandoned huts—dilapidated and forlorn, remnants of lives long forgotten.
The forest, my personal sanctuary, loomed behind the packhouse, filled with trees that whispered secrets of ages past. The scent of fresh rain hung in the air, mingling delightfully with the earthy aroma of damp leaves, a lingering reminder of the evening's storm. It was here, amidst the fallen leaves, that Sabrina and I often found ourselves lost in our carefree ritual—racing through the woods, gathering leaves into piles, and launching ourselves joyfully into their vibrant embrace.
On this particularly warm day, Sabrina's parents had indulged us with creamy vanilla ice cream, a perfect accompaniment to the beauty surrounding us. As we tumbled through the foliage, we found an exceptional grove, alive with a shower of leaves cascading from the branches above. The ancient tree that dominated the spot was a sight to behold, its gnarled bark telling tales of time.
“Have you ever wondered how all these trees came to be?” Sabrina mused, her voice mystical as we lay side by side in our leafy kingdom.
“Of course! It was the Moon Goddess, obviously. Who else could create such beauty?” I responded, teasing her playfully, and her laughter rang sweetly in my ears.
“I wish I could meet her one day,” Sabrina sighed. “I can only imagine her beauty, a radiant figure beyond words.”
Her longing ignited a spark of curiosity within me—would I ever encounter that divine being? Whispers echoed through the pack about visions and messages from the Moon Goddess, urging those who received her grace on paths unknown.
“Just promise me you won't meet her too soon; I’m not ready to lose my best friend just yet,” I joked lightly, though a thread of apprehension clung to my heart.
“Awe, Jassy Jas! I won’t go anywhere; you know you’re more than just my best friend—you’re my sister. I love you,” she professed, her sincerity wrapping around me like a warm embrace.
I playfully swatted her hand, but deep down I felt the weight of her words—that bond between us was unbreakable, thicker than blood.
Our moment of joy shattered abruptly when Sabrina shot up, an urgent expression clouding her features. “Flora senses danger,” she whispered, scanning the edges of the forest with apprehension. Flora was her wolf, and an unspoken bond told me something ominous was looming.
In a heartbeat, I was on my feet beside her, adrenaline surging as we prepared to dash back to the safety of the packhouse. But before we could flee, five wolves materialized before us, powerful and menacing, encircling us with a predatory gaze.
One of them shifted effortlessly into human form, revealing a tall figure with striking red hair and eyes that blazed like embers. The sight of his nakedness sent a shock of embarrassment rippling through me.
“We're searching for the white wolf of prophecy. The witches claim she resides here,” he declared, his voice a lethal blend of authority and threat.
My heart raced, dread washing over me. “There’s no white wolf here,” I stammered, anxiety prickling my skin. I could feel Sabrina tense beside me; instinctively, she stepped forward, her gaze fierce despite her inexperience in combat. At that moment, a surge of courage flooded through me, and I stood by her side, ready to defy the encroaching darkness.
“We know she’s here. You will take us to her, or we will annihilate your entire pack, starting with you two,” he snarled, a cold menace threading through his words as he pointed at us.
Our resolve was faltering as fear washed over Sabrina, her hand trembling in mine. “Kill them!” he ordered ruthlessly.
The command set the wolves into motion, charging toward us like a tide of darkness. We screamed in unison, closing our eyes against the impending doom. But before the collision came, a fearsome growl echoed through the air, halting the advancing wolves in their tracks.
From the shadows, I saw my mother—her wolf, pure and radiant, stepped forward with an elegance that struck me breathless. My father followed closely, alongside Sabrina’s parents, and my heart swelled with hope and terror intertwined.
I had never witnessed my mother shift; I had only seen her meld with her wolf in human form when scolding me for my youthful misadventures. But here she stood, in her true form—her white fur gleaming brilliantly. Wolves of her color were said to be royal. What was happening? Were the rogues truly pursuing her?
A wave of questions crashed over me, but there was no time for answers. I reached for Sabrina, and together, we stepped behind the protective wall of our parents. Sabrina's father shifted, allowing her to leap onto his back, “Come on!” she urged, her hand outstretched toward me. But my loyalty clung to my own parents.
In a swift motion, I caught my father handing something to Sabrina’s mother before he too transformed into his formidable brown wolf, standing solidly beside my mother. A low growl rumbled from him, a warning for the rogues to back down.
As my mother’s wolf locked eyes with me, an unspoken farewell passed between us. I felt the weight of her love and an understanding that this might be our last moment together. The sensation of loss gripped my throat, rendering me speechless. I could not say goodbye—only nod, conveying the depth of my feelings in silence.
I scrambled onto the back of Sabrina’s father, and just as her mother joined us, the mighty wolf took off, racing through the woods back toward the safety of the packhouse. I cast a fleeting glance back at my mother, her figure slowly receding into the shadows, and tears streamed down my cheeks, a mix of fear and longing.
“I love you, Mom,” I whispered into the wind, gasping as Lori tightened her grip around me, sharing in my anguish as we bolted away from the encroaching darkness.
