### Chapter 3
As the clock struck nine, Thorne and Jasmine finally pulled into the familiar driveway of their home. Jasmine, her small form clinging tightly to her father's shirt, felt an undeniable heaviness in her limbs as she emerged from the car. The thought of returning inside, where her mother awaited, cast a shadow over her mood. Yet, Vesta had assured her that Charlene had come all this way, specifically to spend precious moments with them. To stay away any longer would surely break Charlene's heart.
Thorne had emphasized that if they delayed their return, Charlene might join them on their boating trip the next day. The idea of that hung uncomfortably in Jasmine's mind. "Dad, what if Mommy insists on coming with us tomorrow?" she asked, a note of anxiety creeping into her voice.
"It won't happen," Thorne replied with a confidence that was both soothing and assertive. Over the years of their tumultuous marriage, Charlene had often sought opportunities to share time with him. Yet, she knew her husband well enough to retreat when he expressed the need for solitude. A small flicker of reassurance warmed Jasmine's heart; if her dad said it wouldn't happen, then it wouldn’t.
As apprehension began to dissipate, a smile returned to Jasmine’s face. She bounded into the house, exuberantly declaring to Latonia that she was going to take a shower.
"Okay," Latonia responded with a nod, but before Jasmine could scamper away, she recalled Charlene's earlier instructions. "Mr. Henderson," she said, handing Thorne an envelope with careful hands, "Mrs. Henderson asked me to give this to you."
Thorne took the envelope nonchalantly, curiosity flickering in his eyes. "Where is she now?"
Latonia hesitated, hesitating for a moment before revealing, "She… packed up and left around noon. Didn't you know?"
At that, Thorne halted on the stairway, his mind racing. "She left?" he echoed, confusion lacing his tone.
"Yes," Latonia confirmed, her expression a mix of concern and compassion.
Thorne had never pried into Charlene’s reasons for returning to Goldland, and truth be told, he wasn't particularly invested in it either. Hearing she had left was merely a fleeting thought, a moment that barely registered on his mental radar.
However, Jasmine felt a strange pang of loss at the news. Wouldn't it have been nice to have her mother around this evening? Especially if Charlene decided not to join them on the boat the following day. Her fingers still ached from polishing shells she had collected, and she had hoped her mother would help her finish the last ones.
Months had passed since Thorne and Charlene shared the same space—long months filled with silence and distance. Charlene had come all this way, yet they hadn't exchanged a single word. A memory flickered in Latonia’s mind, of Charlene’s disappointed expression as she departed. “Mr. Henderson,” she ventured, hesitating only for a moment, “Mrs. Henderson seemed upset when she left. It looked like she was angry.”
Initially, Latonia had considered that Charlene may have had urgent matters demanding her attention back home. But the realization that Thorne remained oblivious to her arrival left her feeling that something more significant lurked beneath the surface.
"Angry? Charlene? She’s always been so patient and kind to me. Can she really get mad? That's new," Thorne chuckled dismissively, waving away Latonia's concern as he continued up the stairs.
Once inside his room, Thorne was about to rip open Charlene’s letter when his phone buzzed with a call from Vesta. He answered it, momentarily tossing the envelope aside, where it fluttered to the floor beside the bed.
That night, Thorne chose not to return home.
The following day, Latonia, with a mind focused on her cleaning duties, stumbled upon the envelope lying forgotten on the floor. Glancing at it, she recognized it immediately; it was the same one Charlene had intended for Thorne. Assuming he had already read it, she popped it into a nearby cabinet without a second thought.
Meanwhile, Charlene, once her plane had landed, headed straight to her room to begin packing. Six long years had accumulated a plethora of belongings, but she carefully selected only a few clothes, personal items, and a handful of professional books.
Thorne had always taken care of her and Jasmine, depositing money monthly into two separate accounts: one for her, and one for Jasmine. Despite this, Charlene rarely touched Jasmine's account, choosing instead to rely on her own for daily expenses. Yet, deep down, the love she held for Thorne compelled her to indulge in little acts of affection; every shopping trip transformed into an impulse buy whenever she spotted something that would suit him—clothes, ties, shoes, cufflinks—but always with the thought that they were for him.
And as she zipped up her suitcase, determination filled her. It was time to move forward.
